How come this is lost on so many people?

Well, the answer is we've created a society that believes it's everyone else's responsibility to fix their own problems. If it requires taking someone else's money by force of gun, so be it.

-Owning real property entails costs: utilities, property taxes, maintenance and upkeep. Oh, and insurance. If you can't afford insurance, then you can't afford the property. To which the proper response is not, "Have the federal government pay for it," but rather, "Too bad so sad -- move somewhere else."-

But we all know it's everyone else's job to pay for their inability to plan their lives accordingly.
